The Family Relocation Roadmap
From first visit to first school day
Most families complete the move in six to twelve months. This is the sequence the desk runs — and the point at which each specialist steps in.
- 01Month 0
Discovery visit
A week on the island with the desk: school tours, three or four neighborhoods at school-run hour, a paediatric clinic visit and honest conversations with families already here.
- 02Months 1–2
Schools & shortlist
Enrolment windows, waiting lists and assessments are mapped for each child; the home search is narrowed to a 15-minute radius of the chosen school.
- 03Months 2–4
Home & title
Rent-first or buy: offers, the four title checks, survey and inspection. Family-specific items — pool fencing, generator, water storage, fibre — are written into the deal.
- 04Months 3–6
Residency for the family
One residency file covers parents and dependants. Apostilled birth certificates, school records and medical certificates are assembled while the home closes.
- 05Months 5–8
The move
Household shipping timed to the residency exemption, pets' import permits, vehicle, utilities, bank accounts and insurance — handled before you land.
- 06Month 6–12
First school day
Uniforms, transport, after-school activities and a welcome from families in the same community. The desk stays on call through the first term.
Schools & Childcare
Bilingual, international and home-grown options
Roatán is small enough that every school is within reach, and large enough to offer real choice. Confirm current enrolment, fees and calendars directly with each school — the desk arranges the visits.
Bilingual private schools
English–Spanish bilingual schools serve pre-K through high school in Sandy Bay, Coxen Hole and French Harbour, generally following a Honduran calendar (February–November) with US-style curricula and small class sizes. Tuition typically runs a few hundred dollars per month per child.
International-track & online

Bilingual paediatricians consult in West End, Sandy Bay and French Harbour; the private hospital in French Harbour provides 24/7 emergency, imaging and inpatient care.
Serious care & evacuation
Specialist paediatric and surgical care is referred to accredited private hospitals in San Pedro Sula (one hour by air) or to Miami and Houston. Families carry an international health plan plus a medical-evacuation membership.
Gated vs. open communities
Gated resorts such as Pristine Bay offer 24-hour security, pools and playgrounds. Open neighbourhoods like Sandy Bay and West End rely on established, close-knit expat streets — many families choose them for exactly that reason.
